Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept Debuts in Paris

Mitsubishi GT-PHEV concept

After the success of the Outlander earlier this year, Mitsubishi announced plans to reevaluate their lineup, phasing out some of their less popular nameplates and refocusing their efforts on the crossover and SUV segment. It seems one of the first results of that new strategy will be making an appearance at the Paris Motor Show in the form of the new Mitsubishi GT-PHEV concept. This plug-in hybrid SUV offers a more aggressive, stylish look than your typical Mitsubishi nameplate, and its capabilities are strides ahead of most current members of the PHEV segment, too.

According to Mitsubishi representatives, the GT-PHEV will combine a traditional gasoline engine powering the front wheels with an electric motor powering the rear wheels. As a result, the SUV will be able to run up to 75 miles on electricity alone without ever tapping into the fuel tank, about double that of most plug-in hybrids currently in mass-market production. The SUV also features a sleeker, futuristic style, designed with thinner elements and a low-sloped windshield that ends in a sharp rear bumper.

We haven’t been given a peek yet at the interior of the Mitsubishi GT-PHEV concept, though that’s sure to change when the vehicle makes it appearance in Paris. We hear whisperings of burgundy leather that matches the SUV’s roof color, plus a spacious horizontal dashboard.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is one impressive model, but don’t just take our word for it. This crossover recently received an award from Kelley Blue Book (KBB) for being one of the Most Affordable Three-Row Vehicles of 2016. Not only does the Outlander come with a great price tag, but it also comes with tons of great features.

According to Mitsubishi, the Outlander was chosen as one of the top crossovers thanks to its pricing and its great features. This model comes with seating for up to seven, a rugged exterior, and off-road capabilities. What’s not to like?

“We set a new value standard for the brand when we launched the 2016 Outlander last year, and to see it is recognized by such an informative and trusted source in the automotive industry confirms that Mitsubishi is making a name for itself in the SUV/CUV segment,” said Don Swearingen, Chief Operating Officer for MMNA.

Mitsubishi Outlander Interior Helps Secure “Best Value” Award

Mitsubishi Outlander interior

The Mitsubishi Outlander’s interior was created with an active lifestyle in mind.

The new 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the most impressive models on the road, recently earning the “Best Value on the Road” award from the Active Lifestyle Jury. This is an annual event held in Phoenix, Arizona, designed to test the capabilities of models that claim to be sport utility vehicles. The Outlander won hands down.

According to The Intelligencer, over 10 members of the Phoenix Automotive Press Association got together with local athletes to determine which model was at the top of its class. The Mitsubishi Outlander was praised for its powerful engine, dynamic exterior design, and its spacious interior. Improvements on the 2016 model year include better structural rigidity, improved ride quality, a quieter cabin, and more.

The Mitsubishi Outlander interior was what really caught the eye of the judges. This model comes with a redesigned steering wheel, added soft touch materials, new accent trim, and all the latest technologies. The Outlander is roomy and easy to clean, and this model is shockingly quiet even when on the harshest terrain. With seating for up to seven, there’s nothing quite like the new Outlander.

Mitsubishi Aims to Conquer the US Market with the 2017 Outlander PHEV

2017 Outlander PHEV

The new Outlander PHEV has everything the Outlander has and more!

After countless delays, Mitsubishi finally revealed the 2017 Outlander PHEV at last month’s New York International Auto Show.

The Outlander PHEV doesn’t look much different from the normal Outlander model, except it wears different badges and also comes equipped with a charging port, but the PHEV version is actually much different when it comes to the vehicle’s mechanics.

While the regular Outlander model offers the choice between either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or V6 engine, the PHEV SUV comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, as well as two additional electric motors, with one located on each axle. The 2017 Outlander PHEV also features a regenerative braking system that brings more power to its 12-kWh lithium-ion battery.

The new Outlander PHEV also features a unique version of the company’s Super All-Wheel Control system, and there are three distinct drive systems that the SUV can automatically switch between, depending on road and weather conditions: EV, which only uses electric power; series hybrid, which uses electric power with generator operation; and parallel hybrid, which uses power from the gasoline engine and the two electric motors.

Other noteworthy features available for the 2017 Outlander PHEV include blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert and a multi-around view camera monitor, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

“What makes the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV so special is that it offers the best of both worlds with a balance of electric efficiency and long-range practicality,” said Don Swearingen, executive vice president, MMNA. “Mitsubishi put its engineering prowess and knowledge to work to create a vehicle that meets the demand of a growing number of consumers who need a car that is capable and environmentally friendly. The Outlander PHEV will offer a high electric range and combined miles per gallon (MPG).”

While Mitsubishi stopped short of providing exact fuel economy numbers, the Japanese automaker did say the new Outlander PHEV will reach US dealerships later this fall.

Mitsubishi’s Crossover Lineup Takes the Stage

Mitsubishi's Crossover Lineup

Mitsubishi plans to improve their crossover lineup over the next few years to help reach more customers in North America!

Mitsubishi was one of many automakers to feel the wrath of the 2008 recession, but the Japanese automaker is expecting to turn it all around this year. 2007 marked the last year the automaker sold over 100,000 vehicles in the United States. The automaker expects to hit that milestone in 2016 and mark the second year of profit in North America in a row.  To do so, it’s setting most of its focus on a single segment: crossovers.

“We’ve got a laser-like focus on CUVs right now, and we’re certainly committed to this direction,” MMNA vice president of sales Ken Konieczka told The Detroit News. He declined to predict sales up to 2020.

Over the next five years, Mitsubishi expects to improve its entire lineup, centering on its crossover lineup.

Mitsubishi’s crossover lineup isn’t the largest, but it does feature quality vehicles that undergo serious development and improvement year after year. The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, for example, comes in with over 100 changes from the previous model.

As for the automaker’s plans, allow us here at Randall Mitsubishi to lay them out for you.

  • 2016: MirageG4 sedan (early summer), redesigned Outlander PHEV (late summer/early fall)
  • 2018: New crossover based off the 2015 eX concept.
  • 2019: Entirely new Outlander
  • 2020: Smaller Outlander Sport

All in all, there will be an addition or extra improvement to the brand’s crossover lineup for four of the next five years. That’s sure to draw eyes and increase sales from around the world, let alone North America!

The Mitsubishi Outlander, the brand’s popular compact crossover, fits into a category exclusive to a very small number of vehicles. It’s the category of cars that are both extremely practical and extremely fun-to-drive. Those factors, among many others, helped the Outlander earn a spot on KBB.com’s “10 Best Back-to-School Cars of 2014” list.

Here’s how KBB.com summed up the Outlander’s appeal: “One of the most affordable crossovers you can buy is also among the most stylish. The Outlander Sport is the only SUV to make this year’s list, and balances a fun demeanor with the peace of mind of a 10-year/100,0000-mile powertrain warranty.”

Especially attractive to parents is the low starting price of just $19,595, an amazing base price when one considers everything the Outlander features. It offers FUSE Hands-Free Link System, seven airbags, Active Stability Control, and even Mitsubishi’s exclusive Reinforced Safety Impact Evolution technology. With that much technology and safety equipment, it’s no surprise that the Outlander takes its place as one of the best back-to-school vehicle options.
