How to Beat the Winter Blues

Each year millions of Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a type of depression that is most common during the winter. This is often called the winter blues and is caused by colder temperatures and a lack of sunlight. If you are feeling a bit melancholy now that the holidays are over, here are three ways to regain a positive perspective.

  1. Brighten up your life. If you miss the illumination of the holiday lights, go ahead and leave some up. Add some strings of lights to your home decorations or your work cubicle. You can also try wearing brighter colors.
  2. Have fun. One good way to lift your spirits is to have some fun. Winter is a perfect time to head outdoors here in Texas. Go for a hike, visit the zoo, or visit any other favorite spot that you would normally visit during warmer temperatures.
  3. Make some plans. Start anticipating warmer weather by planning where you want to go and what you want to do when the weather shifts. Looking forward to something will help you to feel more excited about waking up each morning.
